'Treasured sword': North Korea seen as reliant as ever on nuclear arsenal as talks stall

14.11.2018 20:13

Just as the United States has doubled down on its sanctions on Pyongyang, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has not retreated from his pledge to expand his operational force of nuclear bombs and ballistic missiles, increasing his leverage under any still-elusive denuclearization deal. A U.S. think tank said on Monday it had identified at least 13 of an estimated 20 active, undeclared missile bases inside North Korea, underscoring the challenge for American negotiators hoping to persuade Kim to give up his weapons programs. As time goes by, North Korea's likely expansion of its arsenal could force Washington to rethink its insistence on full denuclearization, said Moon Hong-sik, a research fellow at the Institute for National Security Strategy in Seoul.

12.11.2018 12:57

A report from a Washington D.C.-based think tank released on Monday said it identified at least 13 out of an estimated 20 undeclared missile operating bases inside North Korea amid the continued push from the Trump administration hoping to persuade the reclusive country to give up its nuclear arsenal, according to Reuters. The Center for Strategic and International Studies released the reports which maintenance and minor infrastructure improvements have been observed even though Pyongyang has been engaging in negotiations about disarmament with the U.S. Researcher Joseph Bermudez said the updates were made even after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump met in June to...

North Korea hiding missile bases, US researchers say

12.11.2018 12:56

North Korea is operating at least 13 undeclared bases to hide mobile, nuclear-capable missiles, a new study released Monday has found, raising fresh doubts over US President Donald Trump's signature foreign policy initiative. Trump has hailed his June summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as having opened the way to denuclearization of the divided peninsula, defusing tensions that less than a year ago brought the two countries to the brink of conflict. Since the summit in Singapore, North Korea has forgone nuclear and missile tests, dismantled a missile test site and promised to also break up the country's main nuclear complex.

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — More than 20 years after his father almost bargained them away for a pair of nuclear reactors, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has his nuclear weapons — and a nation still plagued by chronic blackouts. Even on the clearest days, plumes of smoke from two towering chimneys linger over the center of Pyongyang. The Soviet-era Pyongyang Combined Heat and Power Plant smokestacks are one of the North Korean capital's most recognizable landmarks. Possibly more than anything else, this is Kim Jong Un's Achilles heel as he turns his attention from developing the country's nuclear weapons arsenal to building its economy.
